Flooring installation costs more than the planks because the project begins with an existing floor and ends with a room you can use. Removal, disposal, subfloor preparation, trim, transitions and moving furniture can each be priced separately. A rate that covers laying boards over a ready surface is not the same as a room-restoration total.
TRU Installation’s Southern California price list offers current labor anchors. It lists $2.65 per square foot for laminate and click-lock SPC or luxury vinyl plank, $3 for glue-down vinyl, $3.50 for glue-down engineered hardwood and $4 for nail-down solid hardwood. These are one provider’s labor rates, with flooring material separately quoted and final pricing confirmed after measurement.

Installation method sets the base labor rate
| TRU’s published installation item | Labor rate | Assumed 400-sq-ft calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate or click-lock SPC/LVP | $2.65/sq ft | $1,060 |
| Glue-down vinyl | $3/sq ft | $1,200 |
| Glue-down engineered hardwood | $3.50/sq ft | $1,400 |
| Nail-down solid hardwood | $4/sq ft | $1,600 |
| Diagonal installation addition | $1/sq ft | $400 extra |

The $540 difference between the first and fourth installation examples is not the full price difference between vinyl and hardwood. Their material prices, preparation and installation requirements can differ too. Ask for the selected product and method rather than treating every plank floor as the same labor task.
An advertised per-square-foot rate also needs a measured area. Ask how closets, alcoves and connected rooms are counted, and whether installation labor is charged against installed area or purchased material. Waste bought for cuts is not automatically the same quantity as floor area; the quote should show both.
Removal and disposal change the starting total
TRU lists carpet removal at $0.50 per square foot and debris haul-away at $0.40. In the assumed 400-square-foot example, these add $200 and $160 to the $1,060 click-lock installation, producing $1,420. That subtotal still excludes the new flooring and other work. It also does not absorb the company’s separately stated landfill fee if no trash bin is provided.
Ask what removal includes: carpet pad, tack strips, staples, adhesive, old trim or other layers. A quote for removing carpet cannot establish the price for breaking up tile or removing glued hardwood. Identify the old floor and whether there may be multiple layers before comparing removal prices.
EPA warns that suspect asbestos material should not be disturbed without assessment. An old resilient floor or adhesive cannot be declared asbestos-free from a photo. If assessment changes the removal method, obtain a separate scope and disposal price. The repairs to leave to professionals guide covers why demolition and hazardous-material work are different purchases.
Subfloor preparation has its own quantity
The floor beneath the finish has to meet the selected product’s requirements. Ask what testing and inspection occur after removal and how unevenness or moisture findings are priced. A visible old surface can conceal a subfloor defect, but that possibility is not permission for an unlimited preparation bill.
TRU lists self-leveling preparation at $100 per bag including material. For a labeled example using 3 bags, the addition is $300. Added to the earlier $1,420 removal-and-installation subtotal, that makes $1,720 before flooring, trim and other charges. The number of bags must follow the area, depth and product requirements; this example is not a material prescription.
Shaw’s hardwood planning guidance emphasizes subfloor preparation and product-specific installation instructions. Its general hardwood page describes controlled indoor conditions, including 65–75°F and 35–55% relative humidity, but the selected product’s installation guide governs its requirements. A waiting period quoted for another material is not a substitute for moisture assessment.
Ask the installer to record the test results and obtain approval before adding preparation. The contractor estimate guide helps separate a firm installation price from an allowance for findings beneath the old floor.
Trim and transitions use different units
TRU publishes baseboard installation labor at $2 per linear foot. If a hypothetical room needs 80 linear feet, installation labor adds $160; baseboard material and removal remain separate. Perimeter length and floor area are different measurements, so a square-foot quote cannot be assumed to include every room edge.
Ask whether existing baseboards are removed and reinstalled, replaced or left in place with another molding. Include caulking, nail-hole filling and paint if those finishes are part of the result you want. A new floor can leave a gap where the old material was thicker; the quote should explain how that edge is finished.
Transitions, stair work and door clearance also belong in the scope. Different floor heights can require a named transition product or additional door work. Do not treat a standard room installation rate as a stair price. Record the number and type of stairs or thresholds rather than leaving them as an unnamed “miscellaneous” charge.
Small rooms and purchase waste affect the budget
TRU says a minimum order charge applies below 300 square feet, without assigning a single amount on the price page. For a 100-square-foot room, 100 × $2.65 gives $265 in arithmetic, but not a confirmed job total. Ask for the minimum before assuming the small project will receive the large-job unit rate without additions.
Material ordering has a separate calculation. For an assumed 400-square-foot installed area with a hypothetical 10% cutting allowance, the order quantity is 440 square feet. That allowance is an example only; layout, product, pattern and carton sizes determine the order. Buying 440 square feet does not mean the installer should bill 440 square feet of laid surface unless the agreement uses that basis.
If hypothetical flooring costs $3.25 per square foot, 440 square feet costs $1,430 before tax or delivery. Added to the earlier $1,720 subtotal with preparation, the example becomes $3,150 before trim and other excluded costs. Those transparent quantities let you change an assumption without hiding the cost inside a generic installed range.
Do not sand, scrape or pull up suspected asbestos flooring or adhesive to inspect it. EPA recommends leaving suspect material alone and arranging assessment by trained personnel when planned work could disturb it. The removal quote needs to reflect that assessment before work starts.
The final quote prices a room ready to use
Agree who moves furniture and appliances, protects nearby rooms and replaces doors or trim. Ask when you can walk on the new surface and return furniture under the chosen product’s instructions. Installation day and unrestricted use may be different dates, particularly with adhesive or finish work.
Keep product labels, extra material, test records and the workmanship warranty. Compare the finished invoice with the measured scope and approved additions. The home repair budget guide helps keep this project total separate from improvements you might choose later, such as repainting connected rooms.
Questions people ask
Does $2.65 per square foot include flooring?
No. TRU labels its list as labor pricing and quotes flooring materials separately. Removal, preparation, trim and other additions also need to be counted.
Can a 100-square-foot room be priced at $265?
That is only multiplication of the unit rate. TRU says jobs below 300 square feet carry a minimum order charge, so ask for the job total.
Is a 10% waste allowance required?
No. It is a labeled example. Product, carton size, layout and cutting pattern determine the purchase quantity, which should be shown separately from installed area.
Why is preparation not fixed before removal?
The old floor can conceal moisture or unevenness. Ask for testing, unit prices or allowances and an approval point before additional preparation is charged.
