Is Bathtub Refinishing Worth It? Costs and Limits

Compare a published $435 refinishing price and add-ons with full tub replacement, coating limits, drying time and the condition of the existing bath.

Bathtub refinishing is worth comparing with replacement when the tub is sound and the main problem is its surface. Staining, wear or chips can make a bathroom look tired without requiring demolition around the fixture. A coating can renew that surface, but it does not turn a damaged bath structure or failing plumbing into a sound installation.

ChicagoTubs’ Chicago price page provides a current named-service example: standard refinishing from $435 with tax included. Its listed pour-on method keeps the existing fixture in place. The company advertises about 3–4 hours on site and a bath ready for use after about 24 hours, but the job’s product and conditions still determine the return-to-use instructions.

  • $25 ChicagoTubs caulking, additional charge
  • $75 ChicagoTubs sliding-door installation, additional charge

The existing tub decides whether a coating is an option

Separate surface condition from the bath assembly. A worn finish, a small chip and a stain are different from a tub that moves, a crack that leaks or a drain connection that needs repair. Tell the estimator about recurring leaks, movement, previous coatings and changes you want in the bathroom. A new surface should not hide an unresolved defect.

Ask which tub material the coating system can serve and which repairs are included before coating. Cast iron, steel, acrylic and fiberglass do not automatically receive identical preparation. If the company declines a tub or recommends replacement, ask which finding rules refinishing out. That explanation is more useful than an age-based rule.

Refinishing also leaves the tub’s shape, step-over height and location in place. If the reason for renovation is access rather than appearance, compare a different fixture or layout. The bathroom remodeling cost guide covers expenses that a surface-only price does not address.

Selecting the starting refinishing service and caulking gives $460. Adding door removal brings the subtotal to $495; adding the listed door installation makes it $570. These are sums of the published starting figures, not a guaranteed quote for a previously coated or unusually shaped bath. Confirm whether both door services are needed before adding them.

Ask how much of the old coating is removed and whether the quoted preparation covers its condition. The page lists previous refinishing as included while also identifying extra preparation as a possible price factor. Resolve that boundary with photos and a job quote instead of assuming every failed earlier finish is covered at the base price.

Replacement costs include more than the new fixture

For a hypothetical comparison, a $600 new tub, $700 removal and installation, $400 surrounding tile restoration and $150 haul-away add up to $1,850. Those amounts are illustrative assumptions, not prices published by ChicagoTubs. Against its $570 starting-service-and-add-ons subtotal, the example leaves a $1,280 gap before travel or any other differences.

That gap can favor refinishing if both options solve the same cosmetic problem. It is less persuasive when replacement also corrects a leak, provides needed access or removes a fixture that cannot be retained. Compare the benefits purchased as well as the totals. Spending less on a surface that will soon be disturbed by plumbing work can mean paying for the same finish twice.

Demolition can expose work that a coating avoids, including wall repair, drain changes or damaged flooring. Ask the replacement contractor to show allowances for those discoveries and how changes are approved. The contractor estimate guide helps distinguish firm prices from amounts that remain dependent on what is found.

Drying time is part of the household cost

Ask when the room can be occupied and when water can touch the new finish. Those are different questions. A coating that looks dry may still be curing, and the contractor’s instructions can limit cleaning products, mats or contact with the surface. Obtain the selected coating’s return-to-use directions before booking, particularly when this is the home’s only bathtub.

ChicagoTubs advertises a 5-year work warranty. That term describes its stated coverage period, not a guarantee that every finish lasts the same number of years or that all future damage is free to repair. Request the warranty’s exclusions and claim procedure, including how chips, peeling, cleaners and suction mats are treated.

If an illustrative $570 job remains in service for 5 years, its purchase cost averages $114 annually; at 10 years it averages $57. Those divisions are budgeting examples, not predictions of coating life or warranty extensions. A finish that fails early can also require new preparation, so use observed tub condition and the coating instructions rather than selecting the longest advertised lifespan.

Stripping and coating require a controlled work area

NIOSH’s bathtub-refinishing warning explains that an ordinary bathroom fan or open window does not provide adequate protection against methylene chloride vapors. Do not treat a “low odor” description as evidence that any stripping or coating process is safe for household occupants. Ask for the products used, work-area arrangements and instructions for people and pets.

EPA’s current methylene chloride risk-management page describes prohibitions on consumer uses and most commercial uses, including paint and coating removal. Its fact sheet gives April 28, 2026 as the deadline for most commercial uses; the agency’s later laboratory compliance extensions do not establish a bathtub-refinishing exception. A quote should identify a lawful product process rather than relying on an old stripping method.

Do not strip a bathtub with methylene chloride

Keep household members away from the work area and follow the contractor’s product-specific ventilation and re-entry instructions. NIOSH documents fatal exposure during tub refinishing; a household fan, open window or odor check is not a substitute for the controls the work requires.

A surface-only project has a clear stopping point

The estimate should identify cleaning, preparation, chip repair, coating, masking, caulking and any door work you are purchasing. Ask what the contractor does if preparation reveals a condition that prevents coating. A sensible stop-and-quote process gives you a chance to reconsider replacement before paying for work that cannot deliver the agreed result.

Keep plumbing, structural repairs and surrounding surfaces separate unless they are included. If a wall is opened for another repair, the drywall cost guide covers the finishing boundary. Refinishing works best as a deliberate purchase of a renewed surface on a bath worth keeping, with access, condition and downtime accounted for before the first visit.

Questions people ask

Can refinishing fix a leaking bathtub?

A coating is not a general leak repair. The estimator needs to identify whether the problem involves the tub, drain, support or surrounding installation before choosing a surface treatment.

Is $435 the final price?

It is ChicagoTubs' advertised Chicago starting price with tax included. Travel and extra preparation can change the quote. Caulking and door services are listed separately.

Can the bath be used the same evening?

Follow the selected coating's instructions. ChicagoTubs advertises about 24 hours before use; appearance alone cannot establish curing or re-entry time.

Does a 5-year warranty mean free repairs to everything?

No. Read the exclusions, workmanship scope and claim procedure. A stated warranty period does not cover every cause of damage or predict the finish's lifespan.
