A pool filter replacement quote can mean a new cartridge, a repaired valve, a replacement tank or a different filtration system. Those purchases have very different prices. Ask which component failed and what evidence supports replacement before comparing a full assembly with an inexpensive cartridge found online.
Published equipment prices establish the hardware line. Plumbing changes, fitting, removal and startup establish the installed total. The examples here include both an in-ground filter and smaller above-ground packages so that a low package price is not mistaken for the budget to replace every type of backyard system.

- $189.99 Intex SX2100 sand filter-pump package
- $8.99 Intex Type B replacement cartridge
Equipment prices describe different purchases
The following prices were checked in the brands’ own stores in October 2026. Use the named SKU and compatibility information; these items are not interchangeable and the photographs are illustrative equipment rather than the priced models.
| Named product | Published equipment price | Scope boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Doheny’s 200-sq-ft cartridge filter, SKU 5215 | $524.99 special price | In-ground filter equipment; installation separate |
| Intex C2500, SKU 26633EG | $149.99 | Cartridge filter-pump package for compatible above-ground pools |
| Intex SX2100, SKU 26645EG | $189.99 | Sand filter-pump package for compatible above-ground pools |
| Intex Type B cartridge, SKU 29005E | $8.99 | Cartridge listed for older 28633EG pump; not an assembly |

The SX2100 page displays $189.99 but also a not-available notice. It is a posted price benchmark, not assurance that the unit can be delivered now. Confirm availability, tax, delivery and the included parts before scheduling installation around an online listing.
Diagnosis separates cleaning from replacement
A high pressure reading or reduced flow deserves investigation, but neither alone proves the tank is defective. A dirty cartridge, obstruction, valve issue or another circulation fault can change operation. Request the measured findings and the diagnosed component rather than accepting “the filter is old” as the whole explanation.
Pentair’s Clean and Clear Plus instructions describe cleaning when pressure is about 10 psi above its original starting pressure or flow is significantly reduced. With variable-speed pumps, the starting pressure depends on the pump’s speed. A comparison taken at another speed can therefore be misleading. Have the technician record the operating condition used for the assessment.
That model’s maximum working pressure is 50 psi. It is a limit, not a target operating pressure or permission to pressure-test equipment yourself. Manufacturer limits apply to the whole assembly and its other components. A replacement proposal should account for the pump, valves and piping rather than considering the filter body in isolation.
The pool pump repair guide covers the separate decision when the diagnosed fault belongs to the pump. Replacing a filter to solve a pump problem spends money without addressing the finding.
Flow and maintenance access decide the replacement size
Intex’s SX2100 specifications distinguish its 2,100-gallon-per-hour pump rating from its 1,600-gallon-per-hour system rate. Its page lists a pool-capacity range of 2,800–12,800 gallons and a 12-inch tank using 50 pounds of specified sand. These are model limits for compatible above-ground installations, not a way to size a different in-ground filter.
Pentair similarly publishes model-specific filter areas and flow limits. A larger area can provide more dirt-holding capacity, but the pump, piping and pool requirements still establish the system flow. Ask why the proposed model fits and what clearance is needed to remove its elements for service.
Check access around the pad, lid height and drainage. A tank that fits between existing pipes may still be difficult to service under a low roof or against a wall. Include changes to the pad or plumbing in the quote when they are required; those are installation costs, not evidence that the retailer’s equipment price was wrong.
The installed total includes more than the tank
For an illustrative in-ground replacement budget, take the published $524.99 equipment price, an assumed $150 of fittings and plumbing, $300 of installation labor and $60 of removal and disposal. The total is $1,034.99 before any further charges. Only the hardware figure comes from the named product listing; the other figures are hypothetical quote lines, not national labor rates.
If a $950 provider offer includes the same equipment, plumbing, fitting and disposal, it would be $84.99 below that example total. If it excludes the plumbing, the comparison changes. Put each offer’s included work on the same list before choosing between a delivered tank and an installed replacement.
Confirm responsibility for leaks after fitting, startup records and the first operating-pressure reading. Ask whether the price includes unions, valves, media, cartridges and any electrical work, rather than assuming a product photograph means every visible accessory is in the box. Keep repair approval separate from signing up for recurring cleaning.
Maintenance remains a separate ownership cost
An inexpensive consumable can be worth replacing while the tank remains sound, but only if its identity matches the assembly. The cited Type B page lists compatibility with the older 28633EG pump. Do not infer compatibility with the newer C2500 merely because both descriptions mention 2,500 GPH.
EPA’s pool-maintenance guidance supports minimizing unnecessary cleaning and considering the water use of different filter types. Cartridge cleaning and sand backwashing have different procedures and water costs. Follow the chosen model’s instructions rather than assigning every filter the same calendar schedule.
Pentair warns against adjusting or tightening a filter clamp while the pump is on or the system is pressurized. Arrange installation and pressure testing through the required service expertise; do not open equipment from this price guide.
Use the weekly pool-cleaning price guide to separate ongoing service from replacement, and the pool ownership budget for water and energy costs. A replacement is worthwhile when it resolves the diagnosed fault, fits the circulation system and leaves a maintainable installation. A low equipment price cannot establish those outcomes by itself.
Questions people ask
Does a dirty cartridge require a new tank?
Not automatically. Have the fault diagnosed and distinguish cleaning, a consumable replacement and assembly damage before comparing prices.
Is the $149.99 Intex package an in-ground replacement budget?
No. It is a named package for compatible above-ground pools. An in-ground tank, plumbing and fitting are different purchases.
Is the pump's GPH the same as system flow?
Not necessarily. Intex lists the SX2100 at 2,100 GPH pump flow and 1,600 GPH system flow. Other equipment has its own ratings and limits.
Does a retailer price include installation?
Usually only when the offer expressly includes it. Check fittings, labor, removal, startup, availability and after-installation responsibility as separate scope items.
