Sump-pump replacement costs are easier to compare when the existing basin, discharge route and electrical supply are part of the description. Swapping a pump in a sound pit is a smaller job than excavating a basin or rebuilding a failed outlet line. A battery backup also purchases protection during an outage, rather than simply adding capacity to the primary pump.
SwiftPro’s current Northern Virginia offer is $697 for standard replacement in an existing sound pit, with specified connections and testing. Its primary-pump-and-battery-backup bundle is $3,200. These are local provider prices checked October 2026; the offer ends October 31, 2026 and requires mentioning it when booking. They are not a national average or a quote for a new drainage installation.
Key figures
- $697 SwiftPro primary sump replacement offer, sound pit required
- $3,200 SwiftPro primary sump pump with battery-backup system
- $5,000 Fairfax FMAP 50% reimbursement cap for eligible costs
The standard offer stops at the existing system’s sound parts
The $697 offer includes a new cast-iron primary pump, quiet check valve, needed PVC to the existing discharge, removal of the old pump, testing and a battery water alarm. The company describes a 1/3- or 1/2-HP pump for the package. Confirm the selected model and its performance before approving the job.
The provider excludes a new or deeper pit, work on the outside discharge, a battery backup system and electrical work. Those exclusions matter when the pump failure is accompanied by a cracked basin, restricted outlet or inadequate power connection. Replacing the motor alone would leave those other faults in place.
A battery water alarm is not a battery-powered pump. The alarm can report rising water, but it cannot remove it. Ask which equipment continues working if mains power fails and how the system reports a low backup battery or another fault.
The installed price and backup portion have different boundaries
| Published package or calculation | Amount | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| SwiftPro primary replacement offer | $697 | Listed standard replacement scope |
| Primary replacement plus battery backup | $3,200 | Provider’s installed bundle |
| Difference between those packages | $2,503 | Provider’s separately identified backup portion |
| 50% of a qualifying $2,503 backup portion | $1,251.50 | Conditional FMAP calculation |
| $3,200 less that conditional amount | $1,948.50 | Conditional net, after reimbursement |
Sources: SwiftPro’s own current offer and Fairfax County’s FMAP rules, checked October 2026. The last two rows assume the county accepts the full $2,503 backup portion and reimburses it. The $697 primary replacement is not treated as an automatically eligible backup expense. Pay the contractor’s bill before relying on any reimbursement.
Compare quotes at the full amount owed, not only a possible net after a grant. If another contractor supplies a different backup arrangement, identify what is included in its total. A battery, charger and controller may be parts of one package, while another uses a separate backup pump; the invoice should make the purchased system clear.
The contractor estimate guide helps record the boundaries. Ask whether the existing check valve is replaced, what pipe is included and whether commissioning covers both the primary and backup function.
Pump selection follows flow and lift rather than horsepower alone
Pentair’s sump-pump FAQ explains that required flow and lift determine selection and identifies 1/3 and 1/2 HP as common sizes. It warns that over- or undersizing can cause short cycling or continuous operation. A larger horsepower label is therefore not enough to establish that the replacement is better suited to the basin.
Ask the installer to identify the expected inflow, vertical lift and discharge route, then show the proposed model’s performance at that condition. A maximum flow at minimal lift cannot be substituted for the flow available through the home’s pipework. Basin dimensions and float movement also affect whether the selected equipment fits.
As a hypothetical diagnostic description, a system lifting water 10 feet has a different operating point from the same model tested at zero lift. Do not assign a made-up gallons-per-hour rating to that example. Use the manufacturer’s curve for the chosen pump and the installer’s assessment of the system losses.
A backup quote includes the duration it can support
For a battery arrangement, request the model, battery specification, charging equipment and expected pumping duty under the site’s conditions. A runtime claim based on intermittent cycling is different from continuous pumping. The amount of water entering during an outage determines what the battery is being asked to do.
A hypothetical pump running 10 minutes each hour over a 6-hour outage operates for 60 minutes in total. Running continuously for the same outage requires 360 operating minutes. That sixfold difference explains why a single advertised runtime cannot be assumed to cover every storm. These durations are illustrative, not the runtime of the SwiftPro system.
The portable power station runtime guide can help read battery capacity and load assumptions if you are comparing a separate power arrangement. Confirm motor-starting demands and the pump manufacturer’s requirements before treating a general battery device as a tested sump backup.
Fairfax assistance reimburses eligible work after review
Fairfax County’s program currently lists funding available and accepts applications. It offers 50% of eligible costs up to $5,000, with completed purchases and work required before applying. Its FY2027 approved-practices list covers sump-pump battery backups, limited to one battery backup per pump.
The program requires itemized invoices, proof of payment and completed-installation photographs, along with required approvals. City of Fairfax and the towns of Vienna and Herndon are excluded from the county program. Check the property and proposed practice with the administrator rather than relying on a contractor’s promotional net price.
Funding and approval remain separate from the service purchase. An application can go to a waitlist if funds run out. The conditional $1,948.50 net in the table therefore does not reduce the $3,200 due to the installer or guarantee money back. Keep eligible backup work itemized rather than applying the percentage to every line of the primary replacement.
Testing, discharge and flood safety complete the scope
Commissioning should demonstrate that the primary pump starts, moves water, stops and does not immediately receive an unnecessary return flow. For a backup, the contractor should also demonstrate its intended operating sequence safely and explain the indicators and maintenance instructions.
Confirm where discharged water goes. EPA says roof drains, sump pumps and other rainwater systems should be kept away from septic drainfields because excess water interferes with treatment. The site’s discharge route and local requirements belong in the job assessment; a new pump is not authority to redirect water anywhere convenient.
CDC warns against entering floodwater where electricity may be present. Do not enter standing water to reach a pump, outlet or breaker. Arrange safe electrical and flood assessment before repair or testing, and handle contaminated water as a separate hazard.
The first-day water damage guide covers the response after water enters. Restoration and repair of affected finishes are separate from the pump invoice. Ask what caused the failure and which system parts remain unresolved before signing off on replacement.
Questions people ask
Does $697 include a new sump pit?
No. SwiftPro's offer assumes an existing sound pit. A new or deeper basin, outside discharge work and electrical changes are quoted separately.
Is the included water alarm a backup pump?
No. It reports water; it does not remove it. The provider's battery-backup package is a separate purchase.
Can I subtract the Fairfax grant before paying?
No. The county requires completed and paid work before an application. Reimbursement depends on accepted costs, property eligibility, documents and funding.
Should the replacement have more horsepower?
Select from the required flow, lift and system conditions. More horsepower by itself does not establish better fit, runtime or reliability.
